Today, the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions requested the Korean Ministry of Justice to provide more information in the extradition case of 21-year-old Chung Yo-raa. This request was sent after the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions thoroughly reviewed the extradition request sent by the Korean authorities in early January.

Deputy Director Mohammad Ahsan from the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions says:

“We have asked the Korean authorities to answer some follow-up questions. Until we receive these answers, we cannot reach a decision on the question of extradition.”

Deputy Director Mohammad Ahsan assesses that it will take some weeks to reach a decision after the information is received from the Korean authorities.

Prosecutor requests detention to be extended

The Court of Aalborg decided on 2 January to remand Chung Yo-raa in detention until 30 January. To provide time for Korea to answer the questions and for the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions to complete its processing of the case, the prosecutor of the North Jutland Police will request on Monday that the court extend the remand.

Special Prosecutor David Schmidt Hvelplund from the District Prosecution Service of the North Jutland Police will lead the case when the Court of Aalborg Monday considers whether Chung Yoo-ra is to remain in detention:

“At the hearing, I will ask the court to extend the detention until the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions has made a decision regarding extradition. It is standard procedure to request an extended detention in extradition cases.”

The hearing will take place on Monday, 30 January at 9:00 a.m. at the Court of Aalborg, Badehusvej 17, DK-9000 Aalborg. Special Prosecutor David Schmidt Hvelplund will be available for a brief interview after the hearing.
